Week 1 of my challenge has gone to plan with my target of 210 miles achieved, even if I had to resort to an indoor cycling machine to finish off my last 13 miles.
The highlight of the week was the Leeds Evans Sportive on Sunday 5th March, starting and finishing in the beautiful grounds of Harewood House, Harewood, Leeds.
I wasn’t quite up for the Long route quite yet, as the Medium route that I did was already 55 miles of over 4,800 feet of climbing. Those hills never seemed to end and this was by far my most difficult ride to date.
It was a great morning ride though and even though the legs got to burn on the climbs, I met a lot of great people, one of whom was able to identify the very large birds that I’ve been seeing around north Leeds. I had thought they were buzzards but I know understand them to be red kites.
My general fitness level is good and improving and my legs are getting stronger. My only complaint is my left shoulder blade and the muscles surrounding it. I’m in 24/7 pain due last year’s car accident and it’s a real case of managing this pain throughout the challenge.
